Cookware

Do you love cooking up a storm? Perhaps cooking isn’t really your thing? Either way, there's a lot of ground to cover when it comes to cookware: from frying pans to a roaster, teflon to tempered glass. Here’s a rundown of the questions you should ask when considering the best cookware for you.

How to choose the best home cookware

  1. What do you like to cook? A kitchen bursting with gadgets may be over the top if all you really need is a large frying pan or a stovetop pot. However, if you enjoy trying new things and cooking dishes from a wide range of cuisines, you may well benefit from having a few options.
  2. How much space do you have? We’re talking storage space and bench space. Even the most versatile chef is going to struggle with a raft of cookware items if there’s nowhere to put them.
  3. What kind of stove do you have?
  4. Induction and electric cooktops do best with magnetic metals such as stainless steel, cast iron and enamel-coated metal. Glass, ceramic, aluminium and copper should be avoided.
  5. Gas stoves are more versatile and work well with aluminium pans, as well as copper, ceramic-coated and stainless steel. On the other hand, they don’t pair as well with cast iron pans as it takes longer to heat than on an induction stove.
  6. How experienced are you at cooking?
  7. Non-stick aluminium pans are fantastic for novice cooks, as well as those who are seeking to use less oil, and those who can’t as easily manage a heavier pan. They are lightweight, heat quickly and evenly, and are often dishwasher safe.
  8. Steel and cast iron pans are more durable - lasting many years with proper care - but take a little extra know-how to be able to use without accidentally sticking your food to the bottom.
  9. Enamelled cast iron is both a beautiful statement piece and a practical option with the cooking power of cast iron. It prefers lower temperatures but can be used on cooktops as well as in the oven. Consider what cooking tasks you need your pans to be suited to, and keep an eye out for cookware that suits.
