Jugs

Jugs may be simple, but they play an important part at the table. Not only is a serving jug practical, but it can also make a serious style statement—put one on your dining table or kitchen bench, or even on your office desk. Treat it as a feature piece or pull it out on those cool summer nights when drinking with friends. Not sure which jug to choose? Here are a few tips to help.

Judging the Right Jug to Buy

  1. Decide on its purpose. Is the jug just for decoration? Do you want something simple like a glass water pitcher or water jug you can just pull out of the fridge? Or maybe big, stylish cocktail jugs that’ll make you the life of the party?
  2. A set of nesting jugs can make mealtime a breeze. Fill with oils, sauces or other condiments and pass around the table, then stack them away in the kitchen cupboard when you’re done!
  3. Consider the size of the jug. A 500ml jug is perfect during breakfast for two, while a slim 1.2ml jug can cater larger families and gatherings.
  4. You need a jug that’s strong enough to last through many a casual lunch or family brunch. Stoneware is rough, coarse and thick enough to withstand all sorts of wear and tear. Porcelain is a true classic that’s strong and lightweight, and can be safely placed in the dishwasher, while crystalline is thin, elegant but hard, thanks to its high proportion of minerals.
  5. Find a jug that truly stands out and will get guests talking. A tall, slim pitcher can make for either a beautiful vase sitting on your countertop or dining table. Geometric shapes like large round bases or long cylinder necks can give a modern kitchen a cool retro edge. And you can’t go wrong with a classic egg shape, of course!
  6. Team with the theme: Jugs in earthy tones like woody browns or light green evoke the rustic feel of a Tuscan summer, especially in a matte finish. Classic cream goes with just about any type of décor, from the sophisticated warmth of French Provincial to the vintage charm of shabby chic. Even pop art prints) can add a nice dose of good, kitschy fun.
  7. Complement your jug with other serveware for a more streamlined look, like teapots, platters and serving trays, and even tumblers and mugs. Looking for drinkware that dazzles? Head to your nearest Myer store to check out the latest jugs and other accessories from all your favourite brands.
